The continuous impact of exogenous and endogenous stressors during lifetime gradually leads to dysfunction in cellular cytoprotective response mechanisms, resulting in ageing and/or age-related pathological phenotypes. Thus, given the ageing of human population the discovery of innovative approaches (e.g., bioactive natural products, drugs, specific diets, etc.) that by delaying ageing increase healthspan (the disease-free period of life) is of paramount importance.
